| RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS ON DOCUMENT I. As substances boil, they turn into a gas. In order to separate two substances, we could boil them until one turns to gas. If we kept the pot that the substances are in inside of a glass, dome like container, then the as would turn to condensation on the dome. Then we can take the pot out, turn off the heat, and put a new container inside the glass for the gas to fall into when it becomes liquid again. II. A pressure cooker works because as the pressure gets higher, the heat needed to cook something gets lower. We can see on the scale that the lower the pressure goes, the lower the temperature gets to stay at a gas state. This is also why water boils at a lower temperature in high altitudes. III. If we look at the graph, we can see that in low pressure, gas can turn into a solid without having to become a liquid first, and vise versa. This is called deposition. In high altitudes, there is very low pressure, as water in the atmosphere gets colder as well, it freezes, without becoming a liquid first. |
